Jean-Claude Risset
Responsable du Departement Ordinateur
IRCAM
31 rue Saint-Merri
F-75004 Paris, France

Dear Jean-Claude,

\J

Thank you for your letter of April 6. The arrangements for
my work at IRCAM are quite satisfactory. My plans about just when I
will arrive in Paris are not yet settled, but I imagine it will be
early in September. John Chowning told me about his apartment which
is so near to IRCAM. Of course this would be ideal for me too. If it
is possible I would like very much to be able to take it over when he
leaves and keep it until the end of December. A location like this
would make my work schedule extremely flexible so any possible conflicts
on the use of equipment at IRCAM could easily be avoided. Please let me
know if this might be possible.

Most of my work will certainly be on the KI-10. When the Versatek
is used it will probably be in 30 second bursts. Until we get to doing
extended printing runs there would never be any need to tie up the
equipment for long periods. Since I have always worked in an environment
where many people must use the same devices I am very accustomed to
organizing my work with regard to the needs of others.

I'm sure that John has told you about all our problems with the
impending move of the Artificial Intelligence lab. No matter what happens
I'm sure our working situation will be quite different by the end of
this year. It's too bad this sort of thing must take up our time.
Our summer computer music workshop doesn't start until July but we
already have over 30 applications for only 20 openings. So it looks
like I'll be kept pretty busy until my departure.
